ATEX is an acronym derived from the French ATmosphères EXplosibles. It refers to the European regulation governing worker protection and the compliance of equipment used in explosive risk areas (gases, vapors, mists, combustible dust). The European ATEX directive 2014/34/EU (formerly 94/9/EC) defines the essential safety requirements for equipment and protective systems intended for use in explosive atmospheres.
In summary, the ATEX mark ensures that the HVP-260-EX vacuum pump can be used with flammable A3 refrigerants, including R290 and R600a.
When evacuating systems containing A3 refrigerants (e.g., R290), a significant amount of gas mixed with system oil will vaporize and be drawn into the vacuum pump. To prevent these flammable vapors from being released into the work area, the exhaust hose is designed to discharge them at least 5 m away from the work zone, preferably outside.
For evacuating systems charged with A1 (R134a) or A2L (R32) refrigerants, there is no risk of creating an explosive atmosphere. In this case, it is recommended to use the standard black exhaust cap.
When using the HVP-260-EX on a system charged with A3 refrigerants (e.g., R290), it is mandatory to eliminate any source of sparks within the safety perimeter around the system. This is why the vacuum pump’s power plug must not be connected closer than 5 m from the installation.
According to the ATEX Directive and the EN 60079-1:2014 standard, the HVP-260-EX benefits from an explosion-proof protection ("d" mode), meaning the device is enclosed in a mechanically resistant housing capable of containing an internal explosion without breaking and preventing it from propagating to the surrounding atmosphere.
This is a higher level of protection than spark-proof devices, which only ensure that the device does not produce sparks during normal operation.
